Enquadramento
Workshop ministrado por Yvonne Shashoua, Senior Conservator do Museu Nacional da Dinamarca. O levantamento do estado de conservação de objetos em plástico existentes em coleções de arte, design, história moderna, industrial e de brinquedos permite concluir que 75% dos objetos exibem degradação e precisam de conservação preventiva para diminuir a sua taxa de degradação ou mesmo de tratamentos de limpeza, estabilização e reforço estrutural. Antes de se desenvolver uma estratégia de conservação, é essencial identificar as propriedades dos plásticos, bem como os principais fatores e mecanismos de degradação, através de uma abordagem informada.
Este curso, dividido em sessões teóricas e práticas, possibilitará aos participantes a oportunidade de: identificar as principais famílias de polímeros em coleções, bem como os aditivos mais problemáticos, entender as causas da degradação em tipos comuns de plásticos e reconhecer e monitorizar as patologias resultantes em diversos objetos.
Será discutido o estado da arte no que respeita à conservação preventiva deste tipo de coleções, o que incluirá as pesquisas mais recentes sobre a eficácia dos adsorventes e do armazenamento a frio. Futuros tipos de plásticos que integrarão coleções também serão abordados.
Os participantes porão ainda em prática as técnicas menos danosas para limpeza e consolidação de plásticos.

Em cada um dos 4 dias de duração, as manhãs serão ocupadas com as sessões teóricas, reservando-se a componente prática para a parte da tarde.

Goals, description and program
Condition surveys of plastics in art, design, modern history, industrial and toy collections conclude that 75% exhibit degradation and need either inhibitive conservation to slow their rate of degradation or active treatment to clean, stabilize or strengthen them. Before developing a conservation strategy, it is essential to identify the major factors and pathways of degradation and the properties of the problem plastic using an informed approach.
This four -day course is divided equally into both theoretical and practical sessions. Conservation of Plastics will enable participants to identify the major families of polymers in heritage collections and the most problematic additives, understand the causes of degradation in common plastics types and to recognize and monitor their symptoms in objects. The state of the art for preventive conservation will be discussed and include the latest research on the effectiveness of adsorbents and cold storage. Through practical work, participants will also learn and practice the least damaging techniques to clean and adhere plastics, the most frequent invasive treatments required for plastics in museums. Future types of plastics coming into collections are also discussed.


Course Tutor for Conservation of Plastics
Yvonne Shashoua, PhD, Senior Researcher
Conservation and Science, National Museum of Denmark

Yvonne Shashoua is a Senior Researcher at the National Museum of Denmark investigating the degradation and conservation of plastics. After graduating in industrial chemistry she worked as a paint technologist for Berger Paints in England. She joined the British Museum as a conservation scientist in 1988, specializing in the deterioration reactions and conservation of cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate and rubber from 1995. Yvonne relocated to Denmark in 1998 when offered a PhD scholarship in the degradation pathways and conservation of plasticized PVC at the Danish Technical University and National Museum. She has more than 100 publications including a monograph ´Conservation of Plastics-materials science, degradation and preservation´ published by Elsevier in 2008. Yvonne was coordinator of International Council of Museums – Committee for Conservation´s working group Modern Materials and Contemporary Art until 2008. Current active research interests include the stability of bioplastics, the application of nanomaterials to clean and consolidate modern artworks and the transfer of knowledge of plastics in museums to plastics in the environment.
