Annually, burns affect approximately 11 million individuals globally, causing severe scarring and morbidity without proper treatment. Skin autografts, the conventional approach, result in poor functional and aesthetic outcomes, while being painful and limited for extensive burns. Decellularized dermal matrices have promising potential in tissue engineering, providing cues for restoring skin tissue in humans. This work proposes rabbit skin as a sustainable and innovative source of decellularized dermal matrices for burned skin repair and regeneration. We will take advantage of the structural and biochemical similarities of rabbit dermis and human dermis, valorizing this collagen source as a substantial national by-product produced in ~1tons/day for developing advanced medical devices for skin burns regeneration.
