BSc in Microbiology

The course curriculum comprehends a background in Biological and Biochemical Sciences, and a specialization in Microbiology. The courses included fall into four distinct scientific areas – Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Humanities, with relative weights of ca. 10%, 20%, 65%, and 5%, respectively.

In the first year the subjects in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology aim at providing basic knowledge in these areas. They will enable a solid and integrated learning in different domains, and at the same time promote the introduction of relevant subjects to Microbiology, such as Statistics, Instrumental Methods of Analyses, Genetics and Cell Culture.

In Year 2 you will start from basic subjects, such as General Microbiology and Mycology and Protozoology, and then, into subjects comprising a field of specialization – Food, Environment, Clinical, Industrial, Virology and Immunology. Here you will progressively develop new laboratory, computing, data-handling and communication skills.

In the final year you will acquire knowledge of the latest developments in key microbial topics and will normally engage in a laboratory-based research project. Previous projects have included microbial pathogenicity, microbial genetics, food and environmental applications of microorganisms, functional foods and probiotics. The research project involves experience in research laboratories, clinical laboratories, education and industry.
