Alcina Bernardo

Alcina M.M. Bernardo is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the M.Sc. course in Food Engineering at UCP-ESB. She is a CBQF member since its foundation.

She got her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto, in 1985, her M.Sc., in 1986, and Ph.D., in 1990, in Food Processing from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires, France. In 1985, she was hired by UCP-ESB, where she became Assistant Professor in 1990.  She pursued a postdoctoral programme in 1991 at University of Florida in Gainesville, USA.

She carries out research in ​​Food Science, Technology and Engineering, focused mainly on Fruit and Vegetables. She is co-author of 80 papers in refereed international journals and book chapters (h-index of 23, SCOPUS®). She is responsible for and professor of several curricular units in Engineering to UCP-ESB courses and Fruits & Vegetables to the European M.Sc. course BiFTec-Food4S. Her research work was spotlighted in 2015 by Elsevier (https://www.elsevier.com/connect/spotlighting-the-research-of-10-women-s...).

Ana Gomes

Ana Maria Gomes is Associate Professor at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Escola Superior de Biotecnologia (ESB-UCP); she is Member of the Direction Board of the Research Center, Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), and member (Vice-President) of the Management Board of Integralar - Knowledge division (PortugalFoods) in representation of ESB-UCP. She holds a BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences from University of Coimbra, and a PhD in Biotechnology (Food Science and Technology) from ESB-UCP (1999). She leads the Nutrition and Health Lab at CBQF, and her research interests focus functional foods - added-value and sustainability; valorization of marine resources; bioactive lipids characterization and biological validation; microencapsulation; pro/prebiotics, microbiome and health. She has demonstrated track record of national and international collaborative research activities, including project coordination (+30 projects), research communication (+160 papers/chapters; 4 patents; +300 oral/poster communications) and outreach activities, evaluation committees, lecturing and student supervision (finalized +30 MSc and 8 PhD theses).

Ana Leite Oliveira

Ana Leite Oliveira holds a PhD from the University of Minho (in 2008), collaborating with Depuy Orthopaedics,Inc. (Johnson&Johnson), USA and CSIC, Madrid, followed by a Post-Doc partnering with Tufts University, Boston, USA. She gained expertise in biomaterials for tissue regeneration, working presently in skin-related applications. She has published over 70 international peer reviewed articles and book chapters and participated in more than 100 international scientific and technological conferences, mostly as an oral presenter or as an invited lecturer. The innovation in her work generated 5 patents and links to industry, working with companies to reach new products/processes. She successfully prepared/coordinated various projects funded by National/European agencies and private companies.

Presently she is the head of the Biomaterials and Biomedical Technology Laboratory at CBQF and Invited Assistant Professor at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, responsible for courses in the Master of Biomedical Engineering and Bachelors’ Degree in Bioengineering. Since 2008 she has been assisting the European Commission at the Research Executive Agency (REA) in the role of Expert Evaluator, Innovation Radar and Technical Monitor in several actions from FP7 and H2020 Framework Programmes.

António César Ferreira

António Ferreira received his Ph.D. in Biological and Medical Sciences, from University Victor Segalen of Bordeaux2. The work of doctoral focused on the identification and quantification of odorants associated with Port wine "quality".

Since then, he has been a researcher at ESB-UCP on flavour chemistry and currently his an Invited Assistant Professor at ESB-UCP engaged of different chemistry courses. Since 2010 he has been appointed as invited Full Professor in Flavour Chemistry at Stellenbosch University on the IWBT-DVO department. More recently Antonio took the role of Product Development and Innovation Manager at Cork Supply Portugal.

His research focuses on Metabolomics a technique that aims to obtain the molecular description both qualitative and quantitative of a biological system. Signal processing algorithms are used aiming to consolidate the signal obtained from different analytical techniques in order to extract relevant information about the systems. This systems approach enables to a better understanding of the phenomenon under study.

Most of his works have been in collaboration with Portuguese Wine/Beer companies or other research groups and international companies in Europe such as UNILEVER.

Currently António Ferreira is the coordinator of the Metabolomics Platform in ESB-UCP His laboratory is also devoted to the development of non-destructive sensors monitoring key molecules related with quality and therefore suited to be use on line during production.

António Rangel

António O. S. S. Rangel is Full Professor (Professor Catedrático) at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia (ESB-UCP), Porto, Portugal; he is presently President of the Scientific Board of ESB-UCP and member of the Direction Board of the Research Center, CBQF. He got his degree in Chemistry from University of Porto in 1985, and his PhD degree in Biotechnology (specialisation in Chemistry) from ESB-UCP in 1991.  He co-authored more than 180 papers in international journals and was involved in the supervision of 20PhD theses; he is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal “Talanta”. His research interests are mainly focused on the development of flow-based methods for the automation and miniaturization of (bio)chemical assays, with applications in the environmental, food, and biomedical sectors. His teaching activity involves general chemistry and analytical chemistry disciplines.

Célia Manaia

Célia Manaia research interests include the study of the diversity and ecology of bacteria in human-impacted areas, with special emphasis on the potential impacts of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes as environmental contaminants. The importance of municipal and hospital wastewater, the influence of the treatment processes, as well the tracing of possible antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes have been main research issues. The international and inter-laboratory antibiotic resistance monitoring in water environments, aiming at the development of surveillance schemes has also been an issue of interest.

Célia Manaia is an associate professor at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, has a background in Biochemistry and specialization in Microbiology and teaches in the areas of Microbiology and Genetics. Currently, she is Vice-President for Research and Internationalization at the Porto Regional Center of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and she is member of the Direction Board of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology.

Conceição Hogg

Conceição Hogg received her doctorate from the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of Reading, in the United Kingdom, after graduating in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal. She has been an Assistant Professor at the Biotechnology College since 1991 and is in charge of several Engineering and Food Science and Technology courses. Her interests include food processing technologies and chemical and biochemical transformations of food.

Cristina L. M. Silva

Cristina L.M. Silva is Associate Prof. at Portuguese Catholic University - College of Biotechnology (ESB). She is Chem. Eng. and PhD in Biotechnology and Food Engineering, and is involved in research on quality and safety of processed foods, with special emphasis on mathematical modelling and optimisation of the processes.

She is lecturer of curricular units of Food Processing and Transport Phenomena. She coordinated several national and international projects and was president of the association ISEKI-Food. She is currently a member of the advisory committee of the ISEKI-Food Association, chair of the Education Committee of IUFoST - International Union of Food Science and Technology, and at ESB coordinates the PhD in Biotechnology, is responsible for the international relations, and president of the Pedagogical Council. 

Cristina is also a member of the direction board of the Research Center (CBQF), associate editor of the Journal of Food Processing Engineering, and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Food Studies.

Eduardo Luís Cardoso

Eduardo Luís Cardoso holds an appointment as Researcher, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the task force on Knowledge Transfer and of the Services to Companies at Faculty of Biotechnology – UCP Porto.

He has got a PhD in the area of Innovation from the School of Engineering of the Minho University (PT) and has experience in management roles at different projects and programs from research, innovation and technology commercialization. He also has been member of the board at the Faculty, the CBQF Research Center, and at the AESBUC University-Industry Association. He is graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the Porto University (FEUP) in the year 1986 and as an Industrial Management Master from the same University.

He teaches Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Learning Technologies; and Research Methodologies in different Undergraduate, Master and PhD Programs, in Business, Science and Technology.

His research interests cover: Innovation; Individual and Organizational Learning; Knowledge Management and Entrepreneurship.

He has coordinated a number of R&D+I projects, some funded in programs like RTD FP or ERASMUS+. He has extensive experience of evaluating R&D+I policies, projects, systems and services. He was consultant of the Evaluation Office from the Education Ministry (PT) where he was also Coordinator of one Competence Center for ICT in Education, cooperating during 10 years on the National Network supporting ICT in Schools

He was team member of one spinoff, in 2009, that now operates in the international markets in the area of Laboratory Technologies.

Elisabete Pinto

Elisabete Pinto got her B.Sc. in Nutritional Sciences and her Ph.D. in Public Health, both by University of Porto. She is Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal, where she coordinates B.Sc. in Nutritional Sciences and participates in the coordination of Post-graduations in Pediatric Nutrition and Nutrition and Ageing. She lectures Public Health, Epidemiology and Community Nutrition. Freni Tavaria

Freni K. Tavaria has a Bachelors’ degree in Biology and a PhD in Biotechnology and is currently an Assistant Professor at Portuguese Catholic University where she teaches Microbiology, Cell Culture and Immunology. Her research interests are in Applied Microbiology, more specifically in the area of Biomedical applications. Inês Tomada is graduated in Nutrition Sciences (2001) and has a Master in Clinical Nutrition (2008) both from the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto. The PhD degree (2013) is in Metabolism, Clinical and Experimentation from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. Currently she is an Invited Professor at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University (since 2009) and a researcher in CBQF (since 2018). Practices as a clinical nutritionist in private health services and is a full member of Portuguese Nutritionists’s Council.

Isabel Vasconcelos

M. Isabel A. M. Vasconcelos graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal, in 1984, and got her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Biotechnology, option Microbiology, from the Institut National des Sciences Apliquées de Toulouse – France, in 1987 and 1991 respectively.

Currently she holds an appointment as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biotechnology - Universidade Católica Portuguesa.  She is a member of the Board of the Faculty of Biotechnology since 1998 and currently she holds an appointment as Dean.

Her research interests include: microbial physiology (anaerobic bacteria physiology, yeasts physiology), namely focused on metabolic fluxes control, modification of fermentation patterns, synthesis of molecules with potential high value; development of biological processes for degradation of by-products or residues; synthesis of secondary metabolites by yeasts and bacteria.

She coordinated and participated in several externally funded national and European research projects in the field of industrial microbiology. She also supervised several externally funded research fellowships, including successfully concluded PhD theses and MSc theses. She published scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, was invited to give several lectures and participated in numerous national and international scientific meetings.

João Paulo Ferreira

J. P. Ferreira has a diploma in Chemical Engineering from Porto University, 1987, and a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1993. He is assistant professor at ESB-UCP since 1993, and currently he is the main lecturer of 5 curricular units, at both BSc. and MSc. levels, but also teaches in other units. He is coordinator of the MSc. program in Biomedical Engineering at ESB-UCP, as well as of the same specialization of the BSc. degree in Bioengineering. In research, he develops projects in dairy science and technology, coffee technology, and other applied food science projects. He has also lead several projects on the biomedical field, such as in controlled release technology, production of recombinant antibodies, and applied protein chemistry.  His publications include several scientific articles in the above fields, as well as pedagogical articles in Biochemistry and in Thermodynamics; he is also the author of a textbook Thermodynamics.

José António Couto

Assistant Professor at the College of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University and Researcher of CBQF (Fine Chemistry and Biotechnology Centre) (2006 – present). He got his B.Sc. degree in Biology (Scientific-Technological branch) from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in 1988 and his Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology (Microbiology) from the Portuguese Catholic University in 1996. He was coordinator of the Inovation and Technology Center of the College of Biotechnology Industry Association and Assessor for this same institution (1998-2005). His research interests are focused on food science and microbiology, specially wine. He published several papers in refereed international journals and has participated in several professional meetings and international congresses. He coordinated 8 and contributed to other 16 externally funded research and development projects. He coordinates academic teaching programmes from undergraduate degrees to doctoral studies: master's degree in Applied Microbiology (ESB-UCP) since 2007; post-graduation on enology (ESB-UCP) since 2017; member of the coordination team of the Doctoral Program in Enology and Viticulture (ESB-UCP ​​and UTAD) since 2014.

Manuela Pintado

B.Sc. in Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (1991) and Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) in 1999. She is Associate Professor, Director of CBQF – State Associate Laboratory and Associate Director of the College of Biotechnology of UCP. She is the leader of Biobased and Biomedical products group and coordinates the Bioactives and Bioproducts Research Laboratory. She has established strong interaction with industry mainly in food sector. Main research interest include development and characterization of bioactives and by-product valorization through bioprocesses and extraction processes aiming to obtain high-added value products to be applied to Food and other industries. She co-authored ca. 400 papers in international journals, a creator of 20 patents and she has been involved in the supervision/co-supervision of 34 concluded PhD theses, and coordinated/co-coordinated ca. 90 externally funded projects. She has an h-index of 45 with more than 8400 citations (November 2020)..

Margarida Silva

Over the years Margarida's interests have touched many diverse topics. Currently she's focusing on the benefits of urban gardening, the disadvantages of the genetic engineering of food, and the value of Emotional Freedom Techniques in solving eating disorders.

Her Ph.D. from Cornel University was on molecular biology; as an undergraduate she took biology. At this moment she's an assistant professor and is tasked with overseeing the college's interaction with high school students.

Maria João P. Monteiro holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology with specialization in Food Science and Engineering from the Biotechnology College of Portuguese Catholic University (ESB-UCP), a MSc in Oenology and Ampelology from University of Bordeaux II and a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto.

She is a member of of ESB-UCP since 1988. Is a Teaching Assistant with Regency of Sensory Evaluation and a researcher in in the areas of chemical-sensory properties of food products, consumer perception and cross-cultural sensory studies. Previously (1991-2013) she was Teaching Assistant and Coordinator of the Food Chemical  and Sensory Analysis laboratories of ESB-UCP .

She is president of National Technical Commission for Standardisation in Sensory Analysis since 2008 and Auditor of Food Chemical and Sensory Analysis Testing Laboratories (ISO 17025) of Portuguese Institute for Accreditation, since 2006. She is the ESB representative in ESN (European Sensory Network).

Marta Vasconcelos

Marta Vasconcelos holds a PhD from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and IRRI (Philippines) on rice iron biofortification for Mozambique (2003). She worked for 8 years at the Children´s Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine (USA). She is member of the Direction Board of CBQF and head of the PlanTech lab (https://plantechesb.weebly.com/). She is member of the International Plant Nutrition Council and former member of the Young Academy of Sciences (Lisbon). She has co-authored +70 papers in international journals and has a long and successful track record in coordination and participation in projects dealing with crop diversification, value chains, plant nutrition, and food systems.

Paula Castro

Paula ML Castro obtained a degree in Food Engineering from ESB-UCP in 1989, and holds a PhD degree in Biochemical Engineering from University College London, 1994. Main research areas focuses on developing bioprocesses for sustainability, including biodegradation of pollutants and wastewater treatment and soil phytoremediation combined with the recovery of biobased products, and devising bioinocula for microbial assisted crop production in forestry and agriculture. She co-authored more than 180 papers in international journals and was involved in the supervision of 17 concluded PhD theses. She is currently Full Professor at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia (ESB-UCP). Her teaching activity involves bioengineering and microbiology, focusing on technology and sustainability. She is a member of the Direction Board of ESB-UCP and coordinates the 1st cycle area and the Bioengineering degree. She is the head of the group Environment & Resources of the Research Center, CBQF.

Pedro Carvalho got his B.Sc. in Nutritional Sciences  and his Ph.D. in Food Consumption and Nutrition Sciences, both by University of Porto. He is Guest Assistant Professor at the Catholic University, where he lectures Nutrition and Sports, Human Nutrition I and Nutritional Assessment. He works as Nutritional Counselor of some sports teams and food retail companies. He is also clinical nutritionist specialized in Sports Nutrition and Weight Loss.

Pedro Miguel Rodrigues

Pedro M. Rodrigues has a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering. He is currently an assistant professor at the Faculty of Biotechnology - Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ESB-UCP) and an integrated member of the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF-UCP). He lectures Bioengineering / Biomedical disciplines in digital signal processing, digital electronics, computer programming and machine learning areas at ESB-UCP. His research areas focus on digital signal processing and artificial intelligence applied to the diagnosis of neurodegenerative, cardiac and speech diseases.

Rui M.S.C. Morais got his B.Sc. in Pharm. Sci. from the Univ. of Porto, Portugal, in 1985; and his Ph.D., in 1990, in Nat. Sci. from the Univ. of Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany. He is Associate Professor at UCP-ESB. He is co-author of more than 50 papers and book chapters; one book edited (h-index of 21). Research interest include: bio-based and bioactive products from plant and microalgae and their application in food, feed and health sectors. Coordinator of more than 20 national and international R&D projects; 2 portuguese patents; invited reviewer for several international journals and evaluator for AdI, CRUP and FCT R&D projects. Associate Editor of the journals Marine Drugs and Int. Biobased Plastics. He held an appointment as Director of the CBQF (R&D centre). He holds a position in the Directors Board of the European MSc BiFTec. and he was in the Directors Board of SEFOTECH.NUT for 10 years.

Tim Hogg

Chairman of the Wine Research and Development Agency promoted by the Portuguese wine industry through their interprofessional body Viniportugal from 2006 to 2013 when it was discontinued. He was also member of the core team of the European Technology Platform – Food For Life from its beginning in 2006 until 2012, Portuguese national representative on the EC’s High Level Group of the Knowledge Based Bio Economy (KBBE) initiative during the 6th framework programme and a member of the expert group for the Lead Market Initiative on Bioproducts run by DG Enterprise. He is currently Vice President of the Competitiveness Pole – Portugal Foods (in representation of the Catholic University), and member of the FoodForce network of Directors of European research institutes working on food.
