Sandra Martins Pereira preside Comissão Científica do maior congresso mundial de cuidados paliativos
Sandra Martins Pereira é a primeira cidadã portuguesa a presidir a Comissão Científica de um congresso da European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), o maior evento mundial de cuidados paliativos.
A Investigadora Principal da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), na área de Ética e Sustentabilidade, no Centro de Estudos em Gestão e Economia (CEGE) da Católica Porto Business School, desempenhou o papel de Presidente da Comissão Científica do 18º Congresso Mundial da EAPC. Sob o tema “Equidade e Diversidade”, o evento realizou-se em Roterdão, entre os dias 15 a 17 de junho, e reuniu especialistas, profissionais e investigadores da área, provenientes de mais de 50 associações de 30 países.
Na sessão de abertura, após as palavras proferidas pelo Exmo. Sr. Ministro da Saúde dos Países Baixos, Sandra Martins Pereira, na sua mensagem, destacou a necessidade de promover uma abordagem integrada dos cuidados paliativos, com foco no tema central do congresso, e realçou a importância de investir em investigação inovadora e essencial para diminuir iniquidades e melhorar a qualidade de vida das pessoas com necessidades paliativas e seus familiares. Durante quatro dias, os participantes tiveram a oportunidade de partilhar experiências, práticas e conhecimentos valiosos, relacionados com a temática "Equidade e Diversidade", promovendo a melhoria contínua dos cuidados paliativos e enfatizando a importância de assegurar um acesso equitativo a estes cuidados, independentemente da origem cultural, social ou económica.
A investigadora salienta que a participação neste congresso “assinala o reconhecimento do trabalho desenvolvido na área de Investigação em Ética e Sustentabilidade, mais concretamente em cuidados paliativos, do CEGE”, reforçando que o centro de investigação está, atualmente, a realizar investigação sobre os aspetos éticos e organizacionais dos cuidados de saúde e a efetividade comparativa de diferentes modelos de prestação de cuidados. Além disso, está em curso “um projeto de investigação europeu, financiado pelo programa Horizonte Europa, PAL-CYCLES, focado nas transições de cuidados que procura melhorar a qualidade de vida e os cuidados prestados aos doentes com cancro avançado e às suas famílias”. No âmbito do projeto PAL-CYCLES, o CEGE liderabum Work Package sobre a Análise ética, sociocultural e política dos processos de transição de cuidados em centros clínicos prestadores de cuidados oncológicos.
Ainda no âmbito deste congresso, foi dado início a um projeto COST intitulado COllaboratively DEveloped culturallY Appropriate and inclusive Assessment tool for Palliative Care EDUcation (CODE-YAA@PC-EDU). Além de outras atividades científicas, a equipa do CEGE será responsável pelo desenvolvimento e implementação de dois programas formativos: Empowering leadership e Ethics in palliative and end-of-life care.
A participação da investigadora neste congresso, para além de reforçar a posição de Portugal na vanguarda da investigação em cuidados paliativos a nível nacional e internacional, demonstra o compromisso do CEGE em promover investigação inovadora na área de Ética e Sustentabilidade.
Sandra Martins Pereira chairs the Scientific Committee of the world's largest palliative care congress
Sandra Martins Pereira is the first Portuguese citizen to chair the Scientific Committee of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) Congress, the world's largest palliative care conference.
The Principal Investigator of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), in the area of Ethics and Sustainability, at the Centre for Studies in Management and Economics (CEGE) of Católica Porto Business School, played the role of Chair of the Scientific Committee of the 18th World Congress of the EAPC. Under the motto "Equity and Diversity", the event was held in Rotterdam from June 15 to 17th, bringing together professionals and researchers in the area from more than 50 associations from 30 countries.
In the opening ceremony, following words from the Dutch Minister of Health, Sandra Martins Pereira, highlighted the importance of fostering an integrated approach to palliative care, focusing on the core theme of the congress, and underlined the importance of investing in innovative and essential research to reduce inequities and improve the life quality of people with palliative needs and their families. During four days, the participants had the opportunity to share valuable experiences, practices, and knowledge related to the theme "Equity and Diversity", promoting the ongoing improvement of palliative care and emphasizing the importance of ensuring equal access to this support, regardless of cultural, social or economic background.
The researcher points out that her participation " acknowledges CEGE's work developed in the Ethics and Sustainability Research area, specifically in palliative care", reinforcing that the research center is now exploring ethical and organizational aspects of health care and the comparative effectiveness of different models of care provision. "There is also PAL-CYCLES, a project focused on transitions of care that aim to improve the quality of life and care provided to patients with advanced cancer and their families. Within PAL-CYCLES, we lead the Work Package on Ethical, sociocultural and policy analysis and are part of the Executive Committee".
Participating in this congress also signed the unofficial kick-off of a new COST Action in which members of the Ethics and Sustainability Research Area at CEGE are part of the main group of proposers and will develop and lead two education programs: Empowering leadership; and Ethics in palliative and end-of-life care.
Besides reinforcing Portugal's position at the forefront of palliative care research nationally and internationally, the researcher's participation in this congress proves CEGE's commitment to promoting innovative research in Ethics and Sustainability.
